Understanding the Basics of Precision Compression Springs for Miniature and Micro Spring Applications

Compression springs are the most common type of miniature spring used across many industries and product applications – from micro springs for small electronics and automotive components, to precision aerospace and medical coil springs. Below, we discuss some of the unique design, engineering, and performance attributes behind micro springs, as well as more specific uses for these highly versatile products.

At HyTech Spring and Machine, we manufacture a wide range of spring configurations with open, closed and ground ends. We have the capability to process micro wire ranging from 0.002” up to 0.165” in diameter. Our CNC machining department utilizes automated feeding to grinders, crush grinding and down-feed grinding to hold extremely close tolerances in the manufacturing of custom compression springs.

An Overview of Compression Springs: Design and Functionality

These types of springs are the most common type of miniature spring used within a myriad of unique product applications. This widespread adoption is largely due to the relatively simple design and versatility of performance compared to other spring types. Basically, for most components requiring spring actuation, coiled springs are the easiest and most cost-effective solution.

As the name suggests, miniature springs (or micro springs) are exceptionally small, coiled mechanical wires that store and release energy when subjected to axial load or compression. These crucial components are used in various applications where space is limited and precise force or deflection requirements are essential – from complex electronics and medical devices to basic push buttons.

The major design and engineering features which determine the mechanical properties of custom coil springs include:

  • Wire Diameter – The thickness of the spring wire largely determines the strength and stiffness of the spring, and thus the amount of mechanical energy that is stored and released.
  • Outer Diameter (OD) and Inner Diameter (ID) – The inner and outer diameters define the size and shape of the coil, which also affects strength/stiffness while being essential to compatibility.
  • Free Length – The free length of the spring is its total height when not compressed under a load.
  • Solid Height – The solid height is the length of the spring when fully compressed beyond its maximum load rating.
  • Load and Deflection – These characteristics define the force exerted by the spring under compression and the amount of compression that the coil exhibits.
  • End Configurations – These springs can be customized with multiple different end configurations including closed ends, open ends, or various types of loop ends.
  • Pitch – The spring’s pitch defines the distance between successive coils, which affects the spring’s overall flexibility and load-bearing capacity.

Comparing Compression Springs to Other Common Spring Types:

vs. Torsion Springs

Torsion springs feature a twisted configuration with the wire wrapped around a central axis and the ends sticking out perpendicular to the coil. Typically, the ends are compressed when the torsion spring is installed. This holds the spring under constant tension, such that it tends to snap back whenever pressure is released. So unlike compression springs, which resist vertical compression, torsion springs resist twisting or rotational forces.

vs. Extension Springs

An extension spring is a type of mechanical spring that extends or elongates when a force is applied to it and returns to its original position when the force is removed. It is one of the most common types of springs and finds applications in various industries and everyday devices.
